Migration Tented Lodge
Perched on a rocky ridge above the winding Grumeti River, Migration Tented Lodge immerses you in the raw beauty of the Lobo Valley. Fall asleep to the comical grunts of resident hippos and wake to a landscape of ancient granite kopjes and wild luxury.
Details
Atmosphere! Seclusion! The Hippo’s Serenade! Migration Tented Lodge is a flagship of Serengeti luxury, artfully constructed into a rocky ridge overlooking the Grumeti River. This property is a “best of both worlds” sanctuary, blending the rugged romance of an authentic bush camp with the solid, permanent sophistication of a hilltop estate.
The design is a celebration of the landscape’s stark contrasts. While the open plains lie to the south, the topography here shifts into gentle rolling hills, acacia tree woodlands, and massive granite outcrops. With just twenty luxuriously appointed suites tucked along the riverbank and a main lodge perched high above on a hilltop, the atmosphere is intimate and exclusive. Guests are constantly serenaded by the “bush orchestra”—specifically the comical, deep-voiced “singing” of the resident hippos that make the Grumeti their home.
The Strategic Bridge
Migration Tented Lodge occupies a premier tactical position in the Lobo Valley. Situated at an elevation of 5,410 feet, roughly 30 miles north of the Seronera Valley and 25 miles south of the Kenyan border, it serves as the perfect “bridge” for a multi-stage safari.
The Ideal Stopover Because the migration itself is often elusive in this specific corridor, the lodge is best utilized as a high-end transition point. It allows travelers to break up the journey between the big cat territories of the Central Serengeti and the high-stakes river crossing areas of the extreme Northern Serengeti. Staying here provides a rare opportunity to explore the more “raw and wild” Lobo Valley—a pristine wilderness where you will encounter miles upon miles of nature with almost no other visitors in sight.
Key Regions:
Lobo and the Upper Grumeti
The area around the lodge supports a staggering amount of resident wildlife that thrives here year-round:
- Lobo Valley: One of the most scenic areas of the park, dominated by ancient rock formations. These kopjes house some of the largest and most formidable resident lion prides in Africa, alongside cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas.
- Upper Grumeti Woodlands: This riverine forest is a world of towering Water-berry and African Greenheart trees. It is the preferred domain of the leopard and a sanctuary for troops of baboons.
The Hippo Pools: The river right at the camp’s doorstep is a hive of activity. Guests can enjoy walking safaris to the nearby riverbanks to watch the resident hippo pods and buffalo grazing in the reeds.
Riverside Sanctuaries
The twenty guest tents are massive, encompassing 475 square feet of internal space on elevated wooden platforms. Spread along the banks of the Grumeti River, they are perfectly spaced to ensure privacy and immersion.
The Guest Experience:
- Rich Interiors: Suites feature beautiful hardwood floors, leather love seats, writing desks, and 24-hour power outlets.
- The Hilltop Hike: It is a walk (including a steep set of 45 stairs) from the tents to the main lodge. While a workout for some, this elevation is what grants the common areas their award-winning views.
- Safari Bathing: Every tent features a full en-suite bathroom with running water, dual washbasins, and solar-heated showers.
- Nightly Escorts: Because buffalo and hippos frequently graze between the tents at night, Maasai warriors provide a safe and traditional escort to and from dinner.
- The Honeymoon Suite: Truly magnificent, this suite is set further back and higher up the hill, featuring a private deck and a private Jacuzzi tucked against the rocks under the stars.
Dining Among the Treetops
The main lodge at Migration Camp is perched on a hilltop, housing one of the coziest lounge and bar areas in Tanzania. With plush furnishings and a well-stocked library, it is the perfect place to unwind after a day in the Lobo Valley.
The culinary experience is a high point of the stay, with gourmet meals served in a dining tent that offers glorious views out over the woodlands. The social heart of the camp is the sundowner fire pit and infinity pool, where guests gather as the sky turns to violet. For those heading north toward the Mara River, the kitchen specializes in gourmet picnic boxes, ensuring you are well-fed as you venture into the park’s more remote reaches.
- Singing Hippos: Fall asleep to the legendary “comical voices” of the resident Grumeti hippo pods.
- The Hilltop Infinity Pool: Panoramic views of the woodlands from a pool built into the ridge.
- Walking Safaris: Guided walks to the Grumeti River to explore the smaller wonders of the North.
- Strategic Positioning: The perfect stopover between the Central Serengeti and the Mara River area.
- Lobo Predator Action: Unrivaled access to resident lion prides and leopards in the Lobo Kopjes.
- Award-Winning Decks: The main lodge offers some of the finest viewing decks in the park.
- Inclusive Luxury: Complimentary laundry service and a fully inclusive bar (soft drinks, beer, house wine, and spirits).
- 24-Hour Solar Power: Constant electricity provided in every tent.
