The world-famous Gol Kopjes represent the pinnacle of the Serengeti’s Eastern Plains. Spanning roughly 100 square miles, this constellation of dozens of kopjes has been described as the world’s largest “Japanese rock garden” due to the stark, artistic beauty of the granite formations against the flat, volcanic-rich plains. During the green season, when fresh grass flushes across the landscape and rainwater fills the depressions, the area becomes a theater for the most concentrated wildlife spectacle on the continent. Accessible via a 30-minute drive from Naabi Hill, the Gol complex is both a navigational landmark and a premier destination for those seeking a truly immersive safari.

The topography of Gol is characterized by a “constellation” of granite island-outcrops (kopjes) scattered across seemingly infinite short-grass plains. Hundreds of game loops bisect these formations, offering what many consider the best photographic opportunities in the entire park. The soil here is enriched by volcanic ash, which supports highly nutritious grasses that act as a magnet for the Great Migration. Following rain showers, the landscape is dotted with temporary rainwater pools, which provide essential drinking water and serve as cooling-off spots for the region’s resident predators.

Wildlife viewing at the Gol Kopjes is legendary, particularly during the green season (December to May):

  • Cheetah Capital of Africa: The Gol Kopjes boast the highest concentration of cheetahs on the continent during the green season. As many cheetahs are migratory, they follow the Thomson’s Gazelle migration to these eastern plains. Guests can witness the world’s fastest land animal in action, often pursuing gazelles that exhibit “pronking”—stiff-legged, alarm-signal bounces. Because cheetahs are diurnal (daytime) hunters, the visibility here is unmatched.
    • Note: Cheetahs are extremely fragile. Visitors are encouraged to maintain a respectful distance to avoid stressing these endangered cats, especially when they are hunting or tending to cubs.
  • The Gol Kopjes Pride: One of the first kopjes in the complex is a favored den site for the “Gol Kopjes Pride,” a resident lion group known for their presence atop the rocks. Seeing these massive cats draped over ancient granite is a quintessential Serengeti vision.
  • The Great Migration: During the green season, the plains can be “flooded” with thousands of wildebeest and zebra. The herds often divide in front of vehicles in a dramatic wave of tossing heads and thundering hooves.
  • Predator and Scavenger Dynamics: It is common to see lions guarding recent kills surrounded by a circle of patient vultures. In the heat of the day, hyenas are frequently found submerged in rainwater pools, waiting for the cover of night to begin their hunt.
  • Conservation Support: The Serengeti holds one of the largest remaining protected populations of cheetahs in the world. Efforts like the Serengeti Cheetah Project (supported by ADS) are vital to ensuring these animals thrive in this iconic landscape.
