Barfafu Gorge & Kopjes
Barafu offers one of Africa’s most extraordinary vistas. This remote complex of seven pinkish granite kopjes overlooks a wild gorge, providing a mind-boggling 360-degree panorama of the "Siringit"—the endless, unspoiled plains of the Serengeti.
Details
The long journey to the Barafu (meaning “Ice”) region is rewarded with what many consider the most incomparable view in all of Africa. Situated on the far eastern border of the Serengeti, this 19-square-mile area is the definition of “off the beaten path.” While the eastern plains are transformed into a semi-desert during the dry season, the region explodes with life from November through May. It is a wild, unspoiled, and unforgettable landscape—a constantly changing kaleidoscope of color and life that serves as a critical green-season range for the migration.
The topography of Barafu is a dramatic mix of depressions and heights. The Barafu Gorge dissects the short-grass plains, forming a shallow drainage depression filled with low bushes and trees that act as the headwaters for the Ngarenanyuki River. Rising sharply above this gorge is the Barafu Kopjes Complex, a series of seven rounded, pinkish granite outcrops. From the summit of these kopjes, the terrain opens into mind-boggling 360-degree vistas where the rolling plains stretch toward the horizon in every direction, best exemplifying the Maasai word Siringit (endless plains).
Wildlife viewing at Barafu is highly seasonal and incredibly rewarding for those seeking rare and elusive species:
- The Gazelle Migration: During the wet season, the plains around Barafu are peppered with tens of thousands of Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelles. This massive concentration of prey draws in high numbers of cheetahs and lions, who prowl the edges of the gorge.
- Rare Species: Because of its remote and distinct habitat, Barafu is one of the best places to spot species rarely seen elsewhere in the park, including the fringe-eared oryx, honey badger, and the golden jackal.
- The “No Man’s Land” Experience: Guests often find themselves entirely alone with the wildlife here. It is common to see herds of startled eland (Africa’s largest antelope) galloping across the plains or an African hare darting through the scrub.
- Predator Action: The gorge, with its standing water and thickets, provides excellent cover for predators. The resident lion prides and migratory cheetahs use the kopjes as high-altitude scouting posts to survey the thousands of wildebeest and gazelle that flood the plains during the rains.
