Details

Angata Kiti is a breathtakingly beautiful grassy valley that serves as the only narrow link between the high Serengeti plains and the lower Salei Plains. Carved through the heart of the Gol Mountains, this “hidden pass” offers a rare slice of wilderness where you will likely not see another vehicle. During the green season, the valley transforms into a lush, emerald canvas that feels like a secret world tucked away from the rest of the park.

The valley is a distinct geographical corridor. To its north and south rise the ancient, rugged slopes of the Gol Mountains, while the valley floor is a flat, grassy expanse. As you move eastward through the pass, the landscape slowly transitions from the volcanic-rich soils of the Serengeti toward the more arid environment of the Salei. It is a navigational bottleneck for wildlife, concentrating animals within its picturesque mountain walls.

  • The Passage of the Herds: During the wet season, the valley is a conduit for migratory animals moving between grazing grounds. Tens of thousands of gazelles and zebra may be found within the “arms” of the mountains.
  • Abundant Predators: Because the valley funnels movement, it is a prime area for cheetahs and golden jackals. The high ridges of the Gol Mountains also provide excellent vantage points for lions to scan the valley floor.
  • Birding: The mountain air and valley winds make this an excellent spot to watch large raptors soaring between the peaks as they travel from their nesting sites toward the plains.
