Central Plains

The Central Plains are the ultimate "Big Five" stage. This 30-square-mile grassland floor acts as a natural amphitheater, supporting one of the highest densities of large mammals on Earth, including the rare black rhino and the most successful predator populations in Africa.

The heart of the Ngorongoro Crater is defined by its vast, rolling Central Plains. These grasslands form the primary stage for the incredible wildlife spectacle that has made the Crater a UNESCO World Heritage site. Surrounded by 2,000-foot-high emerald walls, the plains serve as a permanent sanctuary for over 25,000 large animals. Because the animals are confined within the caldera and have grown accustomed to vehicles over decades, the Central Plains offer some of the most intimate and “up-close” wildlife encounters in the world.

The Caldera Floor

The topography is a mosaic of open savanna, shallow watercourses, and seasonal ponds. This flat-to-rolling terrain is dotted with “bare areas”—patches of volcanic soil where animals often gather to dust-bathe or socialise. Scattered waterholes serve as vital meeting points, and the lack of dense cover makes it arguably the easiest place in Africa to witness the raw mechanics of nature, from the birth of a zebra foal to a high-speed hunt.

The Predator-Prey Balance

The Central Plains are a high-biomass powerhouse where the concentration of life is staggering:

  • The Rare Black Rhino: This is one of the few places in East Africa where you can reliably see the critically endangered Black Rhino in the open. They are often spotted grazing alongside the massive herds of buffalo and wildebeest.
  • The Lions of the Crater: With roughly 100 lions residing on the crater floor, the Central Plains boast a density of large cats that is nearly unrivaled. These lions are famous for their dark manes and their habit of lounging near waterholes to ambush thirsty prey.
  • The Hyena Stronghold: Spotted hyenas are the true “lords of the plains” here, numbering over 400. Their complex social interactions and frequent clashes with lions are a hallmark of the Crater experience.
  • The Arrival of Cheetahs: Historically, cheetahs were rare inside the Crater, but recent and regular sightings suggest the ecosystem has become more attractive to them. The open vistas of the Central Plains provide the perfect runway for their high-speed pursuits.
  • Small Carnivores: The long grass and drainage lines are home to the elegant Serval Cat and groups of Bat-eared Foxes, whose oversized ears scan the ground for insects.
