Details

Hidden Valley is a well-kept secret of the Serengeti, tucked away in a remote depression approximately 14 miles northwest of Ndutu. This area is far removed from any official road, offering a spectacular “off the beaten path” experience for those looking to escape the more traveled routes. Because it is a natural water catchment area, its activity is highly seasonal and ecologically significant. The valley is so pristine that it has been deemed ecologically sensitive by park authorities; access is occasionally restricted to protect the environment or to monitor rare species, such as black rhinos, that may wander into the valley from the nearby Moru Kopjes.

The topography of Hidden Valley is defined by its deep drainage depression situated amidst the vast short-grass plains. During the green season, rainwater collects at the center of this hollow to form a substantial waterhole, surrounded by a landscape of low shrubs and bushes. This standing water creates a lush, muddy oasis that stands in stark contrast to the surrounding dry flats. The “hidden” nature of the valley comes from its low-lying position, which keeps it obscured from view until you are almost upon its shores.

Wildlife viewing in Hidden Valley is concentrated and dramatic, particularly during the wet months:

  • The Hyena Wallows: One of the most iconic sights here is the large clans of spotted hyenas. They are commonly seen wallowing in the muddy shores of the waterhole to cool off, often socializing in groups that can number in the dozens.
  • Predatory Action: The permanent-leaning water source makes the valley a prime hunting ground. Lions and cheetahs frequently utilize the surrounding shrubs for cover, waiting for thirsty zebra and gazelle to approach the water’s edge.
  • Rare Visitors: When the green season is at its peak, the valley may host elusive black rhinos from the Moru area. Additionally, the remote nature of the site makes it a sanctuary for smaller, rarely-seen species like the honey badger, bat-eared fox, and various jackal species.
  • Plains Game: Massive herds of zebra and gazelle are drawn to the depression, along with resident ostriches and warthogs, creating a high-density wildlife spectacle in a very compact 5-square-mile area.
