Lake Manyara
The centerpiece of the park, Lake Manyara is a shimmering alkaline jewel formed by the Great Rift Valley. Known for its "pink sea" of thousands of flamingos and over 300 bird species, the lake is a mirror-like sanctuary where saline-rich waters support a unique and vibrant food chain.
Details
With a myriad of animals frolicking along the glittering shoreline and clouds of pink flamingos dusted over its glassy surface, Lake Manyara is a breathtaking sight. The mirror-like surface reflects the shifting shades of the sky—from the rosy hues of dawn to a brilliant mid-day blue, and finally into “golden glass” as sunset strikes the valley.
Lake Manyara was formed by the colossal forces of the Great Rift Valley. Over millions of years, as the rift widened, streams cascaded down the eroding escarpment and pooled into this basin. Like most rift lakes, Manyara has no outlet. This results in intense evaporation, causing salts and minerals to accumulate until they glitter like diamonds around the water’s edge. While the water appears “soapy” and brackish due to this concentration, it remains fresh enough for hippos and other wildlife to drink and thrive.
The Alkaline Garden
The lake’s high salinity is the secret to its massive bird populations. These conditions allow blue-green algae (Spirulina) to thrive vivaciously. This “underwater garden” supports a vast population of fish and serves as the primary food source for the lake’s most iconic resident: the flamingo. The sheer biodiversity is staggering, with over 300 recorded bird species coexisting in this single aquatic habitat.
The Flamingo Spectacle
The sight of great masses of pink-hued flamingos congregating in the shallows is one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife experiences.
- Specialized Survivors: Flamingos are “alkaline specialists.” Their distribution is limited to lakes along the Rift Valley where their specific diet of algae and brine shrimp prospers.
- Vocal Colonies: They are highly social and vocal birds. A large colony creates a cacophony of sound ranging from nasal honking to deep grunts and even growls.
- The “One-Legged” Mystery: Visitors often notice flamingos standing on a single leg. This is a heat-regulation tactic; by curling one leg against the body, they conserve core warmth—a habit they maintain even in the tropical heat of Manyara.
- Aerial Grace: To take flight, a flamingo must run several steps across the water to gain lift. In the air, they are surprisingly fast, reaching speeds of 60 kph (37 mph). Remarkably, these flocks often travel up to 600 km (373 miles) in a single night to move between feeding grounds.
While the flamingos steal the show, the lake is a hub for a variety of “water-wise” species:
- Hippo Colonies: Large pods of hippos are permanent residents, often seen bobbing in the brackish water or basking on the mudflats.
- Birding Paradise: Beyond flamingos, the lake is home to massive flocks of pelicans, Egyptian geese, and storks. The surrounding reeds are the domain of the Grey-headed Kingfisher and the Long-crested Eagle.
- Shoreline Visitors: During the dry season, the receding waters leave a “soda crust” where giraffes, wildebeest, and zebras venture down to the water’s edge, creating a stunning visual contrast between the golden plains and the pink-rimmed lake.
