Lemiyon Triangle

The Lemiyon Triangle is a gateway of giants, where colossal, spirit-filled baobabs dwarf the elephants below. Tucked in the park’s northern tip, this pristine landscape of "black cotton soil" is a world-class theater for aerobatic raptors and elusive nocturnal cats.

Details

Lemiyon is the majestic introduction to Tarangire, forming a distinct triangular zone at the park’s northernmost tip. Bordered by the park boundaries and the Tarangire River, this region is a pristine mosaic of broken grasslands and varied woodlands. It is a landscape defined by dramatic contrasts: the fine, dark “black cotton soil” underfoot and the massive, silvered silhouettes of ancient trees that dominate the horizon. For many, Lemiyon represents the quintessential Tarangire—a place where the scale of the flora matches the grandeur of the fauna.

The Land of the Up-Side-Down Tree

The most striking feature of Lemiyon is its concentration of Baobab trees. With their colossal trunks and gnarled, root-like branches, these trees are hauntingly beautiful and rumored in local folklore to host ghosts and spirits.

  • Ecological Hubs: Beyond their surreal appearance, baobabs are vital to the ecosystem. Their hollow trunks act as natural water reservoirs, their heights provide nesting sites for hornbills, and their crevices house wild bee hives.
  • The Umbrella Canopy: Sprawling across the “black cotton” plains are the iconic Umbrella Acacias, which stretch their thorny canopies like great sunshades, creating the perfect backdrop for photography.

Masters of the Air and Night

Lemiyon is a premier destination for those fascinated by specialized predators and the smaller, more elusive residents of the bush:

  • The Raptor Capital: Even non-birders are often awestruck by the sheer density of birds of prey here. The star of the show is the Bateleur Eagle, a master of aerobatics with a striking orange beak and a signature short tail. You will also frequently see the Martial Eagle (Africa’s largest eagle) and the Long-crested Eagle patrolling the skies.
  • The “Snowflake” Flocks: Vast, shimmering clouds of Red-billed Queleas—the most numerous wild bird on Earth—whirr through the grasslands like a living wave, seeking seeds.
  • Nocturnal Gems: Lemiyon is an excellent place to spot the beautiful Genet Cat. These lithe, cat-like creatures with ringed tails and expressive eyes are usually found sleeping in trees during the heat of the day but become active in the soft light of early morning.
  • The Great Herbivores: The rolling countryside supports healthy populations of Hartebeest, Giraffe, and Ostrich. Large herds of Elephants are a constant fixture, often appearing curiously small when standing beneath the massive girth of an ancient baobab.
