Mandusi Swamp
The Mandusi Swamp is a lush, marshy sanctuary formed by the life-giving Munge Stream. As a vital floodplain, it serves as a critical dry-season refuge for the Crater's legendary bull elephants and a vibrant nursery for a profusion of water birds.
Details
The Mandusi Swamp is a specialized marshy habitat located in the northern reaches of the Ngorongoro Crater. Created by the overflow of the Munge Stream, this 3-square-mile floodplain is a green oasis that remains productive even when the surrounding central plains begin to parch. It acts as a multifaceted sanctuary: a refuge for hippos, a cooling mud-bath for elephants, and a dense cover for smaller, more secretive predators. For bird enthusiasts and those seeking the Crater’s “hidden” residents, Mandusi offers a serene and biologically dense alternative to the open grasslands.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Mandusi is its role in the life cycle of the Crater’s elephants.
- The Bachelor Bulls: There are approximately 70 different bull elephants that are regular visitors to the Crater floor and the Mandusi Swamp. Like the Lerai Forest, this area is dominated by “Giant Tuskers”—old, wise bulls with massive ivory.
- The Missing Matriarchs: Interestingly, breeding herds (cows and calves) almost never descend to the Crater floor, preferring the thick forests of the rim. Mandusi is, essentially, a peaceful “retirement home” where these massive bulls can graze on soft swamp vegetation and socialise in the mud.
From Marsh Giants to Secretive Cats
The swamp’s thick reeds and shallow pools provide a high-stakes hiding place for a variety of species:
- The Hippo Pool: Mandusi features a striking hippo pool where these “generously proportioned” beasts wallow in dense groups. Their presence keeps the swamp channels open, allowing water to flow and creating a habitat for a profusion of water birds.
- The “Small” Predators: Because the marsh provides excellent cover, it is one of the best places to spot the elusive Serval Cat and the rare Side-striped Jackal. Bat-eared foxes are also frequently seen patrolling the swamp’s drier edges.
- Specialized Antelopes: Look closely along the swamp’s periphery for the Bohor Reedbuck and the shaggy Waterbuck, both of which rely on the proximity of water and tall reeds for protection.
- Avian Courtship: During the breeding season, the swamp is the stage for the spectacular courtship displays of the Jackson’s Widow-bird, along with countless storks, herons, and egrets nesting in the reeds.
