Ngoitokitok Springs

Ngoitokitok Springs is a picturesque oasis where crystalline water bubbles from the earth to form a vibrant hippo-filled lake. As one of the few places in the Crater where you can "stretch your safari legs," it offers a world-class picnic setting amidst the grunts of hippos and a profusion of birdlife.

Details

Ngoitokitok Springs is a stunning natural landmark located in the southeastern section of the Ngorongoro Crater. The springs bubble forth with such abundance that they form a small, shimmering lake before overflowing to feed the vast Gorigor Swamp. Named for the rhythmic sound of the bubbling water, Ngoitokitok serves as a vital freshwater sanctuary in an environment otherwise dominated by alkaline pans. It is one of the most popular spots in the caldera, not only for its wildlife but because it is a designated “out-of-vehicle” area where visitors can enjoy a bush breakfast or lunch while immersed in the wild atmosphere of the Crater floor.

The Lakeside Oasis

The topography of Ngoitokitok is exceptionally scenic, making it a favorite for photographers:

  • The Fig Tree Landmark: A small rock outcrop adorned with a single, ancient fig tree stands at the lake’s edge, providing an iconic silhouette against the backdrop of the 2,000-foot Crater walls.
  • The Grassy Perimeter: A narrow, lush strip of grass surrounds the lake, offering a natural “lawn” for resting herbivores and picnicking travelers.

The Spring-Fed Lake: The water is remarkably clear near the source, gradually becoming more reed-choked as it transitions toward the swamp.

Hippos and “Swooping Hawks”

While humans use the area to refuel, the wildlife at Ngoitokitok is constant and vocal:

  • The Hippo Concert: The local hippo pool is a primary attraction. Visitors can stand just yards away from the water’s edge (safely elevated) to listen to the resonant grunts and “wheeze-honks” of these massive residents as they wallow in the cooling springs.
  • The Opportunistic Predators: While the area is generally safe, the local Black Kites (large brown hawks) are legendary. These acrobatic birds are famous for their lightning-fast dives, swooping down to snatch sandwiches or unattended food directly from the hands of unwary picnickers.
  • The “Giant Tuskers”: Massive bull elephants are frequent visitors, drawn by the succulent grasses and fresh water. Watching a six-ton bull amble past the picnic area is a humbling highlight of the Ngoitokitok experience.
  • Birding Brilliance: The springs are a magnet for waterbirds. Look for Grey Crowned Cranes, Egrets, and the majestic African Fish Eagle perched high in the fig tree, scanning the water for a meal.
  • Plains Visitors: Zebra, gazelle, and warthogs are constant fixtures on the grassy shoreline, often grazing in close proximity to the parked safari vehicles.
