North Serengeti

The North Serengeti is a vast, pristine wilderness of wooded rolling hills and ancient granite outcrops. Home to the legendary Mara River crossings and the largest elephant herds in the park, it remains an untouched sanctuary where travelers can witness the Great Migration in total solitude.

Details

The Northern Serengeti is one of Africa’s last great unexplored wildernesses. Extending 55 miles north from the Central Serengeti to the Kenyan border, this 2,200-square-mile region is a stunning landscape of verdant hills, hidden valleys, and massive granite outcrops. While thousands of visitors flock to the Central Serengeti and the Masai Mara, the North remains remarkably quiet. Though the thick woodlands can make game spotting a bit more challenging than on the open plains, the reward is an intimate, exclusive experience where you often have the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles entirely to yourself.

The Great Migration: The Dry Season Refuge

The North Serengeti serves as the critical dry-season refuge for the 1.7 million wildebeest and zebra.

  • The Northward Surge (July–September): The herds move through the northern woodlands as they push toward the permanent waters of the Mara River.
  • The Southward Return (October–November): As the short rains begin, the migration thunders back south through the North Serengeti. The timing is entirely dependent on rainfall, but during these months, the region plays host to the famous Mara River crossings—harrowing events where the herds must navigate steep banks and Nile crocodiles.

Wildlife Viewing: Resident Giants and Rare Specialists

Beyond the thundering migratory herds, the North Serengeti supports a robust and diverse resident population:

  • The Elephant Stronghold: This region holds the largest remaining concentration of elephants in the Serengeti. After being nearly wiped out by poaching in the 1980s, the population has rebounded significantly since the 1989 ivory ban, with herds now flourishing in the protection of the northern woodlands.
  • Predators in the Shadows: Lions, hyenas, and leopards are abundant throughout the region. While the thick bush makes them more elusive than in the south, Cheetahs are surprisingly easy to spot here, as they frequent the open patches and valleys to hunt during the day.
  • The Rare Oribi: The North Serengeti is the only place in Tanzania where you can find the elegant Oribi antelope, a specialized resident of the unique Terminalia woodlands.
  • The Big Buffalo: Large “resident” buffalo herds, which also faced heavy poaching in the past, have returned in force, particularly around the ancient Lobo Valley.

Topography: A Mosaic of Habitat

The topography of the North is strikingly different from the flat southern plains. It is a “microcosm of diversity” featuring:

  • Open Savannahs and Woodlands: A blend of acacia and broad-leafed trees that support both browsers and grazers.
  • Riverine Areas: Lush gallery forests that line the banks of the Mara and Grumeti Rivers, home to hippos, crocodiles, and diverse birdlife.
  • Granite Kopjes: Ancient rock formations (like those in Lobo and Wogakuria) that act as lookout points for predators and refuges for klipspringers.
