Olkarien Gorge
Olkarien Gorge is a massive, deep-cut cliff system that serves as the primary nesting sanctuary for the Ruppell’s Griffon Vulture. This rugged cathedral of stone offers a fascinating look at one of nature’s most efficient and social scavengers.
Details
Olkarien Gorge is a spectacular, massive cliff gorge located within the eastern Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is a place of rugged, vertical beauty and serves a critical ecological function as a protected nesting site. Far from the reach of ground predators, the gorge feels like a cathedral of stone, echoing with the sounds of the wind and the calls of thousands of birds. It is most famous as the “nursery” for the region’s vultures, particularly during the breeding months of March and April.
The gorge is defined by its sheer, precarious cliff ledges and deep-cut rocky walls. It slices through the landscape, creating a vertical habitat that stands in stark contrast to the surrounding flat plains. The mouth of the gorge opens up to provide spectacular views of the Salei Plains, and its high walls create thermal updrafts that are essential for the heavy birds that call this place home.
- The Vulture Colony: Olkarien is the primary nesting site for the Ruppell’s Griffon Vulture. During the peak food season (March–April), the gorge is alive with activity as these massive birds glide down to their precarious nests on the cliff ledges to feed their young.
- Aerial Mastery: Watching the vultures catch the thermals at the mouth of the gorge is a fascinating spectacle. These social scavengers are the ultimate masters of the air, using the gorge’s heights to launch their long-distance foraging trips.
- Specialized Fauna: Much like Nasera Rock, the rocky walls of Olkarien are home to baboons and klipspringers, while the cooler, shaded floor of the gorge can hide small predators seeking relief from the equatorial sun.
