Details

The Heart of the Wild, Redefined. Adventure, seclusion, and raw wildlife—Sametu Camp is where the pulse of the Serengeti beats strongest. While the Seronera Valley is world-famous for its density of big cats, it is often crowded. Sametu Camp was created to offer an alternative: an intimate, off-the-beaten-path refuge that pairs the valley’s legendary wildlife with a profound sense of peace.

Located near the iconic Sametu Kopjes, this gem boasts a devoted staff and a private chef dedicated to bringing “bush luxury” to life. Here, the wild doesn’t feel like a destination you visit; it feels like your backyard. Within minutes of leaving your suite—and often without leaving at all—you can witness lions, leopards, cheetahs, and elephants thriving in their natural habitat. With only 14 tented suites and two family villas, Sametu remains an exclusive base for those who value authenticity over crowds.

The Kingdom of the “Greek Gods”

A Private Kingdom of Big Cats.  At Sametu Camp, it truly is all about LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. Situated on the eastern fringe of the Seronera River Valley, the camp sits in a “low-impact” zone virtually devoid of tourists. With the nearest lodge over an hour’s drive away, guests enjoy the extraordinary luxury of having world-class wildlife sightings entirely to themselves.

The geography here is legendary. The camp is located just south of the Ngare Nanyuki River and west of the beautiful Soit Le Montonye. To the south lie the Sametu Kopjes and Marsh, a landscape steeped in biological history.

The Legacy of the “Lions Share” This area is the ancestral home of the Sametu Lion Pride, made famous by field biologist Jeanette Handy in her classic book, Lions Share. During her years with the Serengeti Lion Project in the 1970s, Handy documented this pride’s epic struggle for survival on the harsh plains. Today, that legacy lives on; the great-great-granddaughters of the lions featured in the book still hold this territory. Currently, the pride is ruled by a powerhouse coalition of four massive males known as the “Greek Gods” (Zeus, Ares, Apollo, and Demeter). These legendary rulers are frequently spotted around the Sametu Marsh, the only permanent water source in the area.

Ancient Secrets of the Marsh Next to the marsh lie ancient wells carved out of bare rock by the Maasai hundreds of years ago. The water remains fresh and clear, and the surrounding reeds provide a secret sanctuary for Sametu pride cubs while the mothers are off hunting. To stand here is to bask in the radiance of an authentic wilderness where civilization feels a million miles away.

Beyond the Marsh: Iconic Kopjes and Hidden Gorges

While the marsh is the heart of the territory, Sametu Camp serves as the perfect launchpad for exploring the most dramatic geographical features of the Central Serengeti:

  • The Maasai Kopjes: Located a short drive to the west, these massive granite towers house the park’s most formidable lion prides. The “cathedral-like” rock formations provide the perfect vantage points for predators to scan the plains for wildebeest and zebra. It is here that the drama of the hunt is most frequently witnessed against the backdrop of ancient stone.
  • Barafu Gorge and Kopjes: To the east lies the remote Barafu Gorge, a wild and rugged frontier. “Barafu” means ice in Swahili, a nod to the surprisingly cool winds that sweep through this rocky canyon. This is specialized territory for the Serengeti’s “Big Three” cats and serves as a vital corridor for the Great Migration as it pushes toward the eastern plains.

Makoma Hill and Ngare Nanyuki: The camp also offers immediate access to the Ngare Nanyuki underground river and Makoma Hill, famous for its high density of cheetahs and the elegant giraffe towers that congregate in the acacia groves.

Canvas Elegance

The camp maintains an exclusive, intimate atmosphere with just fourteen individual tented suites and two additional two-bedroom family suites. This is a place where comfort and practicality meet the rugged beauty of the bush.

The Guest Experience:

  • Elevated Verandas: Each suite is raised above the ground with a large wraparound veranda overlooking the savannah toward the Ngare Nanyuki River.
  • Private Campfires: Stepping down from the veranda, guests find their own personal fire pit. At twilight, the staff can prepare a private fire for a night of stargazing.
  • Refined Interiors: The spacious canvas suites feature hardwood floors, comfortable beds, a writer’s desk, and 24-hour solar electricity.

En-suite Luxury: Bathrooms are equipped with dual washbasins, flushing toilets, and the traditional safari-style “bladder” shower, filled with steaming hot water on demand.

Gourmet in the Bush

Dining at Sametu Camp is a high-point of the adventure. Breakfast is a feast of fresh fruits, yogurts, and made-to-order omelets, though many guests opt for a “picnic breakfast” to catch the first light of a sunrise game drive.

The evening ritual is unforgettable. It begins with sundowners and appetizers around a roaring campfire. As the sun drops, the resident lion pride or hyena clans often begin their nightly “vocalizing”—a wild serenade that signals the start of the hunt. Guests are then escorted to the candle-lit dining tent for a sophisticated four-course meal. Whether dining family-style to share the day’s stories or opting for a private table under a billion stars, the culinary experience is designed to rival the best restaurants, delivered in the heart of the wild.

  • Elite Game Viewing: Immediate access to Makoma Hill, Moru Kopjes, Maasai Kopjes, and the remote Barafu Gorge.
  • Cat Capital: Widely considered the #1 property in the Serengeti for viewing big cats, specifically the “Greek Gods” coalition.
  • Family Suites: Specialized two-bedroom configurations with separate sitting and dining areas for groups.
  • The Infinity Pool: A stunning retreat at the main lodge for relaxing between expeditions.
  • Authentic Safari Rituals: Hot water bottles tucked into the sheets at night and hot towel greetings upon arrival.
  • Inclusive Luxury: Three gourmet meals daily, including appetizers and desserts; soft drinks and bottled water are complimentary.
  • Modern Connectivity: 24-hour solar power and Wi-Fi in the main lodge allow you to share your adventure with the world.
  • Complimentary House Drinks: Enjoy the sunset with a selection of local beers and house wines and spirits included in your stay.
