Tarangire Treetops Lodge
Step into a whimsical Neverland. Built high into the arms of giant, ancient baobab trees, these tree-house suites offer a fairytale escape on the outskirts of Tarangire. Experience Alice in Wonderland-style luxury combined with the raw magic of the African bush.
Details
The totally eccentric but equally luxurious Tarangire Treetops is situated among a stunning patchwork of grassy savanna and looming baobabs. This “fantasy turned reality” begins at the end of a winding road where leaping impala explode from the bush like tawny fireworks. Upon first glance at the reception area—delightfully built around a massive baobab trunk—you will feel you have stepped foot into a fairytale.
With only twenty marvelous suites, Treetops ensures an intimate experience that appeals to all the senses. It is a place of dancing bonfires, cathedral ceilings, and the intimacy of being miles from civilization, all while enjoying the comforts of a five-star hotel.
The Fairytale Boundary The lodge is situated on a private conservancy on the outskirts of Tarangire National Park. This strategic location offers a “Magic Neverland” atmosphere where Maasai warriors greet you and guided night drives become a reality.
The Tactical Advantage:
- Beyond the Boundary: Because the lodge is located just outside the park, guests can participate in unique night game drives and guided walking safaris not permitted within the park proper.
- The Baobab Host: Many suites are built directly into the baobabs, with gnarled branches running through the upper walls, creating a truly one-of-a-kind living environment.
The Tarangire Menagerie Your journey explores the dense elephant populations and ancient flora of the Tarangire ecosystem:
- Tarangire River: The life-giving artery for the largest elephant population in North Tanzania. In the dry season, long columns of wildebeest, zebra, and buffalo file to its banks, pursued by lions and leopards.
- Burungi Circuit: A superb off-the-beaten-path loop traversing the western boundary, where you can spot the shy Lesser Kudu and Africa’s largest antelope, the Eland.
- Silale Swamp: A giant sponge that acts as a haven for great rock pythons, crowned cranes, and massive herds of “Tembo” (elephants) grazing in the grass.
- Matete Woodlands: An exquisite land of tall elephant grass and baobabs, widely considered the best location in the park for consistent leopard sightings.
- Lemiyon Triangle: A northern sanctuary featuring colossal baobab trees and vast flocks of red-billed quelea birds, along with powerful raptors like the Bateleur eagle.
Kitibong Hill: Acacia parklands teem with magnificent buffalo herds and the rare, mottled African Hunting Dog.
The Baobab Penthouses There are only twenty tree-house suites, each a lavish penthouse set high in the leafy canopy of a baobab tree, guaranteed to offer maximum privacy.
The Guest Experience:
- Alice in Wonderland Design: Enter your retreat via a winsome spiral staircase to find a spacious room blending indigenous thatched materials with edgy urban style.
- Panoramic Openness: Suites are crescent-shaped and open-sided with nets and canvas flaps, affording stunning views of the grounds and passing wildlife.
- Artisanal History: Furnishings are fashioned from the rugged timber of old wooden dhows, bringing past stories of the sea to the heart of the savanna.
Contemporary Luxury: Enjoy dual raised washbasins, double metallic showers, and high-thread-count linens in a cathedral-ceiling setting.
Dining in the Canopy Dining at Treetops is a theatrical experience, served on an open-air veranda that feels like a platform to the stars.
- The Sunken Lounge: Relax in a cozy lounge built underneath the baobab’s canopy, centered around a delightful fire pit.
- Sunset Veranda: An open-air dining area offers panoramic views of the western sky, often streaked with crimson while elephants bask in the nearby waterhole.
- Gourmet Feasts: Enjoy delectable multi-course meals by candlelight, accompanied by the live symphony of birds and the aroma of the ancient forest.
- The Baobab Bar: Pour yourself a drink and revel in the solitude of your leafy natural surroundings.
- Night Game Drives: A rare opportunity to witness nocturnal predators in action on the private conservancy.
- Infinity Pool: An azure pool that laps serenely against the savanna, providing a refreshing escape with views of the local waterhole.
- Maasai Cultural Visits: Interact with the local Maasai communities that co-exist with the migrating herds.
- Baobab Library: Lose yourself in a book on Africa in the open-air library or snuggle next to a blazing fire in the main lounge.
