Bologonja Springs

Bologonja Springs is a lush, remote oasis in the North Serengeti. Its fresh water draws colorful birds and rare antelope like mountain reedbuck, while the nearby Larelemangi salt lick is a magnet for massive herds of buffalo and elephant.

Details

Bologonja Springs is an idyllic refuge tucked away in the far northern reaches of the Serengeti. The springs bubble forth to form a clear, cool stream that meanders northwest through a “vine-hung jungle” before eventually uniting with the Mara River. While the area is home to the Bologonja Park Gate, it remains remarkably pristine. Since the 1977 border closure with Kenya, this region has transformed into an isolated wilderness. While hundreds of vehicles gather just ten miles north in the Masai Mara, the Serengeti side offers an intimate, undisturbed theater of nature.

The Larelemangi Salt Lick

Located just a few miles downstream from the springs is the Larelemangi Salt Lick. This 1.5-acre expanse of bare, wet earth is a permanent magnet for the Serengeti’s largest herbivores.

  • The Buffalo “Surf”: This is one of the premier spots to witness massive buffalo herds, sometimes numbering over 1,000 animals.
  • Historical Witness: In 1966, warden Myles Turner described the sound of a herd approaching the lick as an “extraordinary, far-away rustling noise, like distant surf.” He recounted watching entranced as the buffalo rasped at the salt with their rough tongues before being scattered by a single roaring lion.

Wildlife Viewing: Unusual Residents and Brilliant Birds

The permanent water and ample shade of the canopy forest support species rarely seen in the southern plains:

  • The Steenbok: This charismatic little antelope is a North Serengeti specialty. Often misidentified as an oribi, it can be recognized by the charming triangular black smudge on the tip of its nose.
  • Rare Browsers: Bologonja is one of the few places to spot the Mountain Reedbuck and the elusive Bushbuck hiding in the thick riverine foliage.
  • Avian Splendor: The forest is a “technicolor” dream for birders. Look for Kingfishers, Hoopoes, and Rollers flitting through the branches, while Crowned Cranes patrol the marshy edges.
  • Primate Antics: Vervet monkeys shriek from the treetops while baboons romp under the leafy awnings, often providing an early warning system for approaching leopards.

Topography: A Jungle in the Savanna

Explorer Stewart White captured the essence of Bologonja in 1913:

“The Bologonja was indeed a clear stream, running over pebbles and little rocks, shadowed by a loft vine hung jungle of darkness and coolness… Yet twenty steps brought us into the open, where we could see the rolling green hills with their scattered little trees.”

This “twenty-step” transition from dark riverine forest to wide-open rolling hills makes Bologonja one of the most photographically diverse regions in the park.
