FAME: Medical Excellence in the Rural Bush
Bridging the Medical Gap
Tanzania is one of the 50 poorest nations on earth. In rural areas like Karatu, the maternal and child mortality rates are heart-breaking—1 in 9 children die before age five, often from treatable diseases like malaria or pneumonia.
The F.A.M.E. Story
Founded by Dr. Frank Artress and Susan Gustafson in 2002, the Foundation for African Medicine and Education (F.A.M.E.) provides first-world diagnostic and medical care to the Karatu District.
- The ADS Impact: Our donations allow F.A.M.E. to purchase enough medicine to treat children with pneumonia.
- Humanitarian Award: ADS was honored with the Humanitarian Award by the Tanzania Minister of Tourism specifically for our work with F.A.M.E.
Pro Tip for ADS Guests: We invite all guests to stop by the F.A.M.E. facility in Karatu (between Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro) for a tour and presentation. It is a powerful reminder of how safari tourism creates “adventure that heals.”
Quote from Founder Susan Gustafson
“For us, ADS is a shining star in the tourism industry. With what ADS has donated this year alone, FAME Medical can purchase enough medicine to treat 2700 children diagnosed with pneumonia. This is a company that sees the a[euro]oebig picturea[euro] a[euro]” the importance of providing clients with an awe inspiring wildlife experience, while at the same time making a very tangible difference in the day-to-day lives of the Tanzanian people.”
