Details

Sophistication! Serenity! The Granite Kingdom! Opened in 2013, Lemala Kuria Hills is an unexpected but welcome oasis tucked way (way) off the beaten path. Hidden discreetly behind a massif of ancient granite kopjes in the remote Wogakurya Hills, this 5-star permanent tented lodge is a treasure trove of unexpected delights.

At only 15 guest suites, the lodge’s intimate scale allows for a level of personalized service and warm hospitality that makes every guest feel like the only resident of the hills. From the infinity swimming pool on the main deck to the private plunge pools at every turn, elegance and refinement exude from every detail. The design successfully embraces the pristine nature of its setting, ensuring that every architectural choice serves to highlight the raw beauty of the Northern Serengeti.

The Enchantment of Wogakurya

Lemala Kuria Hills sits in Wogakurya, a special region of the Serengeti delineated by open plains, smooth granite kopjes, and unique broad-leafed Terminalia trees—a striking departure from the acacia-heavy woodlands found elsewhere.

The Cheetah Capital & The Oribi Sanctuary Wogakurya is a land of unexpected biological wonders. The relatively open grasslands support the highest concentration of cheetahs in the Northern Serengeti, as the wide-open spaces allow these flashy cats to run freely. Even more remarkable is the presence of the Oribi antelope. These graceful dwarf antelopes, identifiable by the black scent gland below each ear, are found nowhere else in Tanzania. Wogakurya boasts a density of 31 oribi per square kilometer—the highest recorded density in all of Africa.

The Wogakurya Kopjes Towering 300 feet above the landscape, the Wogakurya Kopjes are a fascinating tangle of rocks. They serve as a sanctuary for surefooted klipspringers that bound between boulders with zealous confidence and old bachelor buffalo bulls seeking a quiet refuge. From the summit, the views are superb: to the north, valleys sweep down toward the Mara River and the blue Isuria Escarpment, while to the east, the land rolls toward the Lamai Triangle.

The Glass-Fronted Sanctuary

The true pinnacle of a stay here is the guest suite itself. Each room offers a generous 70 square meters of living space, but the primary theme is the view. Governed by a design philosophy that honors the African sun, every suite faces WEST to capture the legendary Serengeti sunset.

The Guest Experience:

  • Frameless Horizons: The west wall of each suite is comprised of floor-to-ceiling glass. Frameless sliding doors open out to a grand balcony, complete with loungers, sunshades, and a private plunge pool.
  • The Dual-Shower Ritual: Guests can choose between a soak in the oversized bathtub or a refreshing rinse in one of two showers—a modern indoor glass-and-stone shower or a chic outdoor shower under a dome of infinite blue sky.
  • Nocturnal Serenades: While the glass offers a window to the world, the canvas and wood construction allows the sounds of the Serengeti night—the grunting of lions or the panicky honking of zebras—to drift through the room, ensuring guests feel safely immersed in the wild.
  • Modern Refinement: Each suite is equipped with a writing desk, 24/7 solar electricity, and a discrete dash of technology for communicating with the doting staff.

Beyond the Kopjes

Life at Lemala Kuria Hills extends beyond the game drive. A grassy pathway invites guests to wander from the common areas, past tree swings and beneath the shade of towering fig trees, to a small, discrete chalet at the base of the hill.

The Melengali Spa This private retreat is home to a fully equipped massage studio. Guests can indulge in a menu of decadent spa services as the chalet opens to magnificent views of the rolling hills beyond. A sunset massage here is often cited as the most impactful experience of the journey.

Dining and Twilight Rituals Weather permitting, dinner is served at the dedicated bonfire circle, dramatically illuminated by lanterns and candles beneath a blanket of starlight. As the night deepens, guests are escorted back to their suites by Maasai warriors, a final reminder of the authentic wilderness that surrounds this 5-star sanctuary.

  • West-Facing Sunsets: Guaranteed panoramic views of the Serengeti sunset from every bed and balcony.
  • Oribi & Cheetah Hotspot: The premier location in the Serengeti for viewing Africa’s highest density of oribi and northern cheetahs.
  • Tactical River Access: Ideally located on the corridor migratory animals follow en route to the Mara River.
  • Private Plunge Pools: A standard luxury in all 15 suites.
  • Melengali Spa: A discrete hillside chalet offering private massage, pedicure, and manicure services.
  • Maasai Escorts: Traditional protection for all guest movements after dark.
  • Gourmet Al La Carte: Delicious array of cooked-to-order meals featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients.
  • Eco-Friendly Luxury: 5-star experience maintained through a carbon-footprint-conscious design.
