The Enchantment of Wogakurya

Lemala Kuria Hills sits in Wogakurya, a special region of the Serengeti delineated by open plains, smooth granite kopjes, and unique broad-leafed Terminalia trees—a striking departure from the acacia-heavy woodlands found elsewhere.

The Cheetah Capital & The Oribi Sanctuary Wogakurya is a land of unexpected biological wonders. The relatively open grasslands support the highest concentration of cheetahs in the Northern Serengeti, as the wide-open spaces allow these flashy cats to run freely. Even more remarkable is the presence of the Oribi antelope. These graceful dwarf antelopes, identifiable by the black scent gland below each ear, are found nowhere else in Tanzania. Wogakurya boasts a density of 31 oribi per square kilometer—the highest recorded density in all of Africa.

The Wogakurya Kopjes Towering 300 feet above the landscape, the Wogakurya Kopjes are a fascinating tangle of rocks. They serve as a sanctuary for surefooted klipspringers that bound between boulders with zealous confidence and old bachelor buffalo bulls seeking a quiet refuge. From the summit, the views are superb: to the north, valleys sweep down toward the Mara River and the blue Isuria Escarpment, while to the east, the land rolls toward the Lamai Triangle.

Beyond the Kopjes

Life at Lemala Kuria Hills extends beyond the game drive. A grassy pathway invites guests to wander from the common areas, past tree swings and beneath the shade of towering fig trees, to a small, discrete chalet at the base of the hill.

The Melengali Spa This private retreat is home to a fully equipped massage studio. Guests can indulge in a menu of decadent spa services as the chalet opens to magnificent views of the rolling hills beyond. A sunset massage here is often cited as the most impactful experience of the journey.

Dining and Twilight Rituals Weather permitting, dinner is served at the dedicated bonfire circle, dramatically illuminated by lanterns and candles beneath a blanket of starlight. As the night deepens, guests are escorted back to their suites by Maasai warriors, a final reminder of the authentic wilderness that surrounds this 5-star sanctuary.
