Perched on the western flank of the Central Serengeti, Pioneer Camp sits at the mouth of the Mbalageti River Valley. This is a plains-woodland transition zone where golden grasslands ripple like waves against gigantic granite boulders and ancient candelabra trees.

The Secret Gem of the Serengeti

The camp serves as an elite base for exploring the most diverse and historic circuits of the Southwest Serengeti:

• Moru Kopjes: These are the most extensive kopjes in the park, believed to have been formed millions of years ago. They serve as a critical water catchment area for the Mbalageti River, drawing massive bands of elephants, lions, and leopards.
• Maasai Paintings & Gong Rock: A short walk from the camp leads to ancient rock art—paintings of shields and people created by young Maasai warriors (il-moran). Nearby is “Gong Rock,” a natural lithophone once used as a communication device.
• Lake Magadi: A shallow saline lake just northeast of the kopjes. Its “glass-like” waters are a magnet for thousands of pink flamingos, which gather here to feed on soda-rich minerals.
• The Rhino Project: Guests can visit the local visitor center to learn about “Rajabu,” the legendary bull who saved the Serengeti’s rhino population, and the ongoing efforts to protect these 16 resident individuals.
