Taasa Lodge
The green hills of Loliondo rise above tangled thickets where mica rock glitters like spilled jewels. Taasa Lodge is a rare star of the North Serengeti, offering off-road freedom, night drives, and 600 sq. ft. luxury suites at a breathtaking elevation of 6,000 feet.
Details
Making its grand debut in 2010, Taasa Lodge is a “fantasy turned reality” perched upon the gently sloping escarpment of Loliondo hill. The setting is magical: the piney smell of native Lantana wafts on the breeze, while the faint clang of distant cow-bells from nearby Maasai villages drifts through the air like far-away wind chimes.
Constructed of wood, brick, and heavy timbers bound with nautical rope, the main lodge is designed to let the Serengeti sunshine spill in through a series of elegant French doors. From the corkscrewing kudu horn candle holders to the campfire terrace overlooking the valley, Taasa is a permanent sanctuary that balances sophisticated décor with the raw, primal energy of the North Serengeti.
The High Escarpment At an elevation of 6,000 feet, Taasa sits 4 kilometers from the Klein’s Ranger Post. It occupies a vital wildlife management corridor where migratory herds spill out of the park boundary during the dry season. The Tactical Advantage:
- Unrestricted Freedom: Since Taasa is on a private concession, guests enjoy unrestricted off-road game driving—allowing you to take your safari in any direction you choose—along with night drives and bush walks.
The Outlook Point: A short walk up the hill from the lodge leads to an elevated lookout where guests sip drinks around a blazing fire as the sun sets over the western bluffs.
Taasa offers activities that transform a standard safari into a deep immersion:
- Night Game Drives: As night falls, the land becomes an “alien landscape waxed in silver moonlight.” Using a specialized vehicle with a front “spotter seat,” you can watch hippos emerge from the rivers and see elephants melt into the clearings like silent battleships in the night.
- Escorted Bush Walks: Tailored to your preference, these walks allow you to appreciate the “subtle details”—from medicinal plants to animal tracks—while enjoying the gorgeous vistas of the Loliondo hills.
- Authentic Cultural Interactions: Visit a local village to witness traditional singing and dancing. You may even participate in a tribal naming ceremony, walking away with your own unique Maasai name.
- Sundowners & Warriors: Prior to dinner, enjoy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails while Maasai staff showcase their prowess as warriors through traditional dance on the campfire terrace.
Two-Level Luxury Suites The 15 suites are a celebration of colors and textures, each offering over 600 square feet of meticulously designed space.
The Guest Experience:
- Vibrant Design: Expect unexpected splashes of kelly-green and fuchsia, leather sofas, and bed frames made of recycled aluminum accented with brilliant Maasai beadwork.
- The Stone Veranda: Each suite features a large veranda made of indigenous stone that glints with mica and quartz in the sunlight.
- Industrial-Chic Bathrooms: Featuring cream-tiled floors, hammered iron sinks elevated on concrete basins, and gnarled timber light fixtures.
- Thoughtful Finishes: The suites are stocked with lemon and lavender soaps, chestnut shampoo, and a refreshing safari facial mist.
The Great Hall
- The Main Dining Room: A two-tiered space where tables are accented by giant kudu horn centerpieces.
- The Library Bar: Located a few stairs above the lounge, this is a quiet retreat for a post-safari cognac.
- Bush Gastronomy: Exquisite food is served both in the formal dining room and at secret bush locations, accompanied by exceptional service from a staff that feels like family.
- Infinity Swimming Pool: A spectacular hilltop oasis overlooking the Lobo Valley.
- Family Activities: Specialized programs include shorter bush walks, animal track identification, and stargazing in the Southern Hemisphere.
- Off-the-Beaten-Path: Taasa serves as a remote base for exploring the most beautiful and isolated reaches of the North Serengeti.
