Details

Adventure! Seclusion! The Great Migration! Woodlands Camp is an authentic, “Out of Africa” experience designed to put guests at the very center of the action. Nestled in an open acacia grove far off the beaten path, this camp is semi-permanent, meaning it is a mobile masterpiece that follows the rhythm of the herds to ensure the best possible wildlife viewing.

Consisting of twelve classic safari tents and two expansive two-bedroom family tents, the camp is a stylishly decorated oasis. Elegant safari tents line a grassy pathway leading from a main dining tent and lounge, offering a level of luxury that caters to even the most discerning travelers. Here, the “mobile” nature of the camp is its greatest strength, offering a front-row seat to the Serengeti’s premier events during the heart of the green season.

From Naabi Hill to the Gol Kopjes

Woodlands Camp boasts a location that is both beautiful and strategically unparalleled. It is situated partially up the southern slopes of Naabi Hill, a landmark that towers above the short-grass plains and serves as the official gateway to the Serengeti.

The Viewpoint of the Plains Other than a hot air balloon safari, the viewpoint from the top of Naabi Hill offers the finest panoramic views of the plains found anywhere in the park. During the green season (December to May), the surrounding landscape is often “choked black” with hundreds of thousands of wildebeest—a truly spectacular sight that can often be seen directly from the campsite.

A Wildlife Stronghold Naabi Hill is much more than a viewpoint; it is a thriving ecosystem. The acacia-covered slopes provide shelter for elephants, giraffes, and various antelope species. Most notably, it is the home base for the formidable Naabi lion pride and serves as a critical denning site for cheetahs. At Woodlands Camp, the wildlife often comes to you—don’t be surprised to see families of elephants gliding past or giraffes delicately nibbling on the surrounding umbrella trees as you relax at camp.

The Gateway to Cheetah Country Perhaps the camp’s most exclusive advantage is its proximity to the world-famous Gol Kopjes. Located just a 30-minute drive away, these kopjes boast the highest concentration of cheetahs in Africa. Often described as the “world’s largest Japanese rock garden,” the Gol Kopjes complex offers what many consider the finest game viewing in Africa during the green season. With hundreds of game loops bisecting the constellation of ancient rocks, photographic opportunities abound. It is here that guests have the best chance in the park to witness the world’s fastest land animal sprinting in pursuit of the fleet-footed Thomson’s Gazelle.

From this strategic base, guests can also explore the most legendary “secret” spots of the Southern Serengeti:

  • Hidden Valley: A natural depression that holds water long after the surrounding plains have dried. This “hidden” oasis becomes a magnet for tens of thousands of wildebeest and zebra, creating a natural amphitheater for predator-prey drama.
  • The Triangle: A remote and rarely visited wedge of the Serengeti known for its staggering numbers of Thomson’s gazelles and the sleek cheetahs that follow them. It is one of the best-kept secrets for those looking to escape the crowds.
  • Simba Kopjes: The inspiration for “Pride Rock,” these massive granite formations are the home of the legendary Simba Pride. They offer some of the most iconic lion sightings and scenic photography opportunities in the entire park.

Lemuta Hill and Waterhole: For those seeking true isolation, a journey farther east leads to Lemuta Hill. This remote outpost marks the transition between the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The Lemuta Waterhole is a critical life-line in this arid landscape, attracting massive concentrations of Thompson’s gazelles and the predators that shadow them. It is a place of stark beauty and total silence, where you can often scan the horizon for miles without seeing another vehicle.

Classic Safari Elegance

The accommodations at Woodlands Camp strike a perfect balance between the charm of a mobile camp and the comforts of a luxury lodge. Each of the classic safari tents is elegantly appointed with a quaint writing desk, storage trunks, and bedside tables complete with candle-lamps.

The Guest Experience:

  • Authentic Tented Living: Tents are designed to be mobile yet exceptionally comfortable, featuring 24-hour electricity and power outlets for charging devices.
  • En-suite Facilities: Each tent features a private, enclosed bathroom with a dressing area, a proper flushing toilet, and a vanity with running water.
  • The Safari Shower: Guests enjoy the quintessential safari ritual of a hot shower, with up to 40 liters of water heated to order upon request.

Family Connectivity: The camp offers two-bedroom family tents, making it an ideal choice for groups. Wi-Fi is available in the common areas to keep guests connected.

Gourmet on the Move

Despite its mobile nature, the culinary standards at Woodlands Camp are remarkably high. The staff specializes in “bush luxury,” delivering four-course gourmet meals that rival permanent five-star establishments.

The dining experience is deeply atmospheric. During the day, guests can watch iridescently hued lovebirds flit through the sunlight of the open-air dining tent. As evening falls, the social heart of the camp moves to the roaring bonfire. Under a profusion of stars, guests share safari stories while listening to the deep, resonant throb of lions roaring in the distance. Every sunrise and sunset over the acacia woodlands provides a vivid silhouette that will surely linger in your memory for a long time to come.

  • Migration Epicenter: Ideally positioned for the green season migration (Dec–May) at the foot of Naabi Hill.
  • Elite Cheetah Viewing: The closest property to the Gol Kopjes (30 mins), home to the highest concentration of cheetahs in Africa.
  • Photographer’s Paradise: Access to the “Japanese rock garden” of the Gol Kopjes for world-class wildlife photography.
  • The Naabi Pride: Direct proximity to the Naabi lion pride and prime cheetah denning areas.
  • Authentic Safari Showers: Hot water on demand for a classic, refreshed feel after a day on the plains.
  • Gourmet Dining: Sophisticated four-course meals prepared by a talented staff in a remote wilderness setting.
  • Wildlife Immersion: Regular sightings of elephants and giraffes from the camp pathways.
  • Complimentary House Drinks: Enjoy the sunset with a selection of local beers and house wines and spirits included in your stay.
