Know Before You Go
A balloon safari is a thrilling highlight for many, but because we want your experience to be perfect, we believe in total transparency. It is important to set fair expectations before you book:
- A Shared Experience: These flights are operated by Serengeti Balloon Safaris or Miracle Experience Balloon Safaris. We arrange this on your behalf, but it is not a private activity; you will share the magic with up to 16 guests from various lodges in a large, communal basket.
- Time & Opportunity Cost: While you’ll be in the air for about an hour, the entire excursion—from the 5:00 AM pickup to the bush breakfast—takes up the majority of your morning. This means the balloon safari takes the place of your morning game drive.
- Luck of the Wind: The pilot can control altitude but has very little control over lateral direction. You will travel wherever the wind carries you. Consequently, you will only see the animals directly in your flight path. Even if a massive herd is visible in the distance, you may not be able to fly over them.
- Scenery vs. Wildlife: This experience is primarily about the unique aerial perspective of the Serengeti landscape. While wildlife sightings can be spectacular (especially hippos in the Seronera or the Migration during specific months), animal sightings are not guaranteed and rely heavily on luck.
- Safety & Risk Awareness: Ballooning is a potentially dangerous activity. It is important to note that a fatal crash occurred in the Serengeti in 2010, resulting in two casualties and several injuries. We encourage you to review the safety procedures implemented by the operators. All passengers are required to sign a liability waiver before launch.
- Camera Gear: You are welcome to bring a camera, but due to space constraints and the nature of the landing, we strongly recommend leaving large, sensitive telephoto lenses on the ground.
